Her formal introduction to the reborn medium came in 2011, sparked by an unexpected discovery while browsing eBay in search of a simple baby doll for her young niece. The hyper-realistic nature of reborn babies stopped her immediately. What she encountered was not a toy — it was wearable, holdable fine art, and it fundamentally altered her understanding of what a doll could be. The pivotal turning point came shortly after at a dedicated doll exhibition in Peterborough, United Kingdom. It was there that Joanna encountered premium collectible art dolls in person for the first time, and engaged in a deeply formative conversation with the established and highly respected sculptor Linda Murray. Recognising Joanna's intense passion and latent anatomical intuition, Murray encouraged her to acquire modelling clay and begin sculpting her own original figures. She did — and the reborn world has never been the same since. The Anatomy of Perfection — Her Sculpting Philosophy Creating a premier reborn doll kit requires what can only be described as a near-medical understanding of neonatal anatomy — skin tension, skeletal structure, fat distribution, and the micro-textures that make a newborn face unmistakably real. Joanna works primarily with polymer clay and Monster Clay, each chosen for specific anatomical tasks. Polymer clay enables the rendering of infinitely complex skin micro-textures: the tissue-thin folds of a neonatal eyelid, the subtle muscular ridge of the philtrum, the translucent and precisely defined appearance of infant nail beds. Monster Clay — a proprietary, reusable, sulphur-free modelling compound — offers thermodynamic properties that allow her to heat, soften, and remould broader anatomical zones with exceptional control. What started as a hobby quickly became a passion that would change my life. 2016: Becoming a Reborn Artist In June 2016, I took the leap from collector to creator. I taught myself the intricate art of reborning—from painting delicate skin tones with Genesis Heat Set Paints to rooting mohair strand by strand, from weighting bodies to feel authentically real to adding those tiny details that bring a baby to life. My first dolls were learning experiences, but with each baby I created, my skills grew. I experimented with techniques, studied real newborn features, and poured countless hours into perfecting my craft. Today: A Full-Time Reborn Artist After years of dedication and growth, I now work full-time as a reborn artist and content creator. What was once a dream is now my reality—I spend my days creating beautiful babies, sharing my process on YouTube and social media, and helping collectors find their forever babies.
